They Might Be Giants performed live on Hinds Plaza in front of the Princeton Public Library Saturday evening.
”Regular stores have their Black Friday for Christmas, this was our Black Friday. It was the biggest day of the year,” said Jeff Rusnik, the weekend manager of the Princeton Record Exchange. “The line went around the block after the show. They (Might Be Giants) are great, they are very patient and they like their fans.”
Estimates put the audience at about 1,100 people for the free concert from the band that got its start in Brooklyn in the 1980s.
The group, known for their alternative rock and children’s music, won a Grammy for their theme song used on “Malcolm in the Middle” and perform the opening song to “The Daily Show.”
”It turned out to be such a beautiful, sunny night and I think everyone had a great time,” said Jon Lambert, general manager of the Princeton Record Exchange, who was still in awe that the band even came to Princeton.
”They called and offered to play for free, which is amazing for a band of that size,” said Mr. Lambert. “It was the most exciting day the store has ever had. They did a shout out that we were one of the best record stores in the country.”
They Might Be Giants sang many crowd favorites, including the “Alphabet Song,” “The Mesopotamians,” and “Birdhouse in Your Soul.”
After the concert, band members took about two hours with fans, signing autographs and taking pictures.
The fifth annual Record Store Day brought 4,000 people into the Princeton Record Exchange.
Record Store Day has celebrated the unique culture of more than 700 independent record stores around the country since 2007.
The Princeton Record Exchange is located at 20 S. Tulane St., Princeton. Store hours: Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. (609) 921-0881; www.princetonrecordexchange.com
