Heads Up

I’ve been spinning two recent CD releases this week, Bobby Hutcherson’s “Head On” (Blue Note Connoisseur Series) and Charles Lloyd Quartet, “Rabo de Nube” (ECM) and enjoying them both, particularly the Hutcherson release, or more accurately, CD re-release, as four of the tracks were originally released on a Blue Note LP in 1971.  The CD adds three lengthy (and excellent, not just filler)  tracks to the original release.  Interestingly, these releases are both from artists who made their mark during the 1960s and 1970s and who are still performing and recording regularly.  The Hutcherson is more than 30 years old but could be an original contemporary work, it is so vibrant and challenging.  The Lloyd is a contemporary work, recorded in concert in 2007, but if I were told it was the work of 30 years ago, I would not find it hard to believe, as it is, for better or worse,  so distinctly “Lloydian” in concept and expression. Ever since my kids got Guitar Hero last year, my classic rock expertise has become hip again. They find it amazing that I can name any song on our South Florida rock station 98.7 The Gater, and usually within 10 seconds. OK, that may not impress you. But it floors my kids. And since they think everything else I do is either stupid or old (they are teen-agers), I have to enjoy whatever compliments I can get.

It’s strange hearing one son blast Kansas and Boston. (Boy, could he have picked two more faceless bands?) Meanwhile, my other son digs Billy Joel. They’ve been playing U2 nonstop the last few days. And now when they find out about a band, they ask me which album is the best.

Happy Birthday John Coltrane

Author: Anthony Medici
09 21st, 2008

This post is simply to pay homage to John Coltrane, born September 23, 1926, in Hamlet, NC, died July 17, 1967 in Long Island, NY. While I am not quite ready to join the St. John Coltrane Church I can understand the impulse to canonize this great musical spirit, for Coltrane is one of the great musical artists of the 20th century. I say that, I think, without exaggeration. The term “great” or “greatness” are often tossed around all too casually, but there are a few spirits that deserve it: Trane, Miles, Monk, Mingus. They changed our musical language, and hence our world, in profound ways. Read the rest of this entry »

Any time Nine Inch Nails rolls into town, there is likely to be an event. Mostly because they ARE the event. The lineup sported by Trent Reznor was no exception. It was great to see Robin Finck, as well as seeing (again) Josh Freese, who was drumming for Devo at the Pier (see an earlier blog) in Philly. Alessandro Cortini is a breath of fresh air for all the musicians in the audience. Since Cortini joined the band, all the keyboard parts have been played as they should be as opposed to what other NIN keyboardists were doing, which was triggering one key to play an entire phrase.

No cheating at THIS show, it was ALL good.

First off, I apologize for the recent unprofessionally long absences. I have been shirking my duties, but it will cease and desist, I promise. Read the rest of this entry »

This is the second blog in this series (of four), a quick-hit scientific breakdown of Kiss albums in search of what the best Kiss album is - ever! The last blog left off after the first album, which might be their best. It’s time to continue to make my way through Kiss records, some of which don’t share the same high level of quality as “Kiss”. Just remember, this is science!

I’m about to take myself back to sixth grade… in two different ways. The first way is the
kid listening to ‘Creatures of the Night’ by Kiss who stared at that album cover, loved how freaking huge those drums at the beginning of ‘I love it Loud were’ and swore the eyes on the album cover glowed in the dark. The second is the kid who talked too loud in science class and got sent to the principal’s office…. a lot. Yet, despite my mouth running non-stop I somehow managed to pick up and remember The Scientific Method. You remember it, right? If not, it’s time to dust off those cobwebs.

Early September, 2008

Greetings from Princeton Record Exchange,

Recently arrived: Soul, Latin and Gospel records; Indian Soundtrack records; and classical cds

The recent flood of quality record and CD collections continues. This week we have a wide variety to report, but we’re pressed for time (trying to get everything out!), so we’ll just touch on the highlights.

We have just put out over 1,500 very nice 70’s Soul, Latin, and Gospel LPs. These records are in beautiful condition; it’s a real pleasure to see these 30+ year old titles looking so good. Most of the classic-era soul artists are here including Funkadelic, Isaac Hayes, The Spinners, Al Green, etc. The Latin titles include dozens on the Tico, Fania, and Alegre labels of artists like Ray Barrettto, Willie Colon, Eddie Palmieri, and Joe Cuba among many others. This collection also features a great assortment of 70’s Gospel.

Most are priced from $4.99 to $14.99 with some rarities higher. We are very out of room, so you’ll have to dig through the regular new arrival section, but if you’re looking for this type of music, we’re sure you’ll find it worthwhile

Also of note is a very interesting collection of original, mostly 70’s, Indian soundtracks. At around 200 titles, it’s not a huge collection, but it certainly is one of the more unusual we have seen in a while. These came over from India with some nice folks who sold them to us. They are mostly in very good shape and are priced around $9.99 each. As with the collection above, they are mixed in our regular new arrival section.

And finally, we have purchased a collection of over 1,000 classical cds. These do not have a specific dominant theme, but are heavy on Baroque and Renaissance titles, with some “historical” recordings as well. Around 70% are under $5.00 and are in our cheap CD bins. The rest are in the classical new arrival section and are priced slightly higher.

Hope to see you soon.
