Anna Troy Band “Wait Another Day”
by Beverly Paterson in Album Reviews
Anna Troy Band “Waitng For The Day” (Blindspot 113)
An impressive debut album can be both a blessing and a curse. One on hand, how wonderful it is to be accepted first time around. But then again, recording a follow up to such a fine piece of work can be stressful since expectations are running high. However, Anna Troy need not worry, as her sophomore release, “Wait Another Day” is just as good as her freshman outing, “Ain’t No Man,” which hit the streets a couple of years ago.
The term “classic rock” may be grossly abused these days, but there’s really no other way to describe this disc. Envision a collaboration between Aerosmith and Fleetwood Mac (with a bit of input from The Pretenders), and that’s where the controls are set on “Wait Another Day.” Stabbing guitar chords laced with a bluesy undertow spark “Catch The Rain,” while an acoustic folk pop presence is housed within “The Way You Dream.” Racing with vim and vigor, “Out Of Luck” and the title track of the album rock with emotional force. But melody is never sacrificed for power, giving the tunes a strong commercial bent. Anna’s vocals shine, soar and swagger with assurance, and her six-string chops illuminate with feeling and substance. Resonant keyboard exercises and the wailing whistle of a harmonica also make a nice addition to the standard guitar, bass and drums employed on the songs.
A number of familiar faces assisted Anna on “Wait Another Day,” including Greg Douglass (Country Weather, Steve Miller, The Greg Kihn Band) and Bart Mendoza (Manual Scan, The Shambles). Accompanied by an air-tight band that complements her own special talents, Anna Troy has unleashed a dandy of a record. Energetic and earnest, “Wait Another Day’ is the place to go for those with an appreciation for hard edged pop rock sounds.
