Beatles Butcher Cover, Christmas Flexi’s and other Beatles’ rarities

by jon in In & Around Our Store, Recent Large Collections, What's New

Hello from Princeton Record Exchange,

We have just purchased a great assortment of hard-to-find Beatles vinyl rarities including the controversial “Butcher Cover” version of “Yesterday and Today”, six of the original fan-club-only 7” Xmas flexi’s, and more.

As a quick recap for those of you who are unaware, the butcher cover is infamous for its depiction of the band dressed in white coats and covered with decapitated baby dolls and pieces of meat.  The records were on sale this way for one day, caused much outrage, and were immediately recalled.  Rather than scrapping the covers entirely, Capitol pasted on a different picture and redistributed them. They are now amongst the most collectable records in the world.  This copy is a “3rd State” (peeled, with the original cover showing).  They often get ripped in the peeling process, but this one is in excellent condition.  We are putting it out at $599.99.

Fortuitously timed, this collection has six of the original Beatles Christmas 7” flexi’s (very thin and flexible vinyl, like the singles that were in magazines or on the back of cereal boxes through the sixties).  These were sent out to fan club members from 1964 to 1969 and were not available in stores.  We very rarely get these in, and I have never seen six at one time!  Prices range from $25 to $60 depending on their conditions.

From the early eighties, this collection has several interesting box sets: The Beatles E.P.’s collection (14 7” E.Ps with picture covers, U.K. import), The Beatles Collection (24 7” singles with a flexi and E.P, also U.K.), From Liverpool (8 LP U.K. import set), and the Mono Collection (U.K. numbered limited edition of the first 10 LPs in mono).

And finally we have a couple of sought-after “audiophile” items; a pristine Mobile Fidelity collection (all 13 original U.S. LPs carefully mastered on heavy virgin vinyl), and a very rare Mobile Fidelity UHQR pressing of Sgt. Peppers (out-of-print limited run of 5,000 copies, 200 gram vinyl).

If you have been searching for these types of records, we encourage you to visit us soon; we dont expect them to last long. Because of the scarcity of these records, and because so many of our valued customers are looking for them, we do request that you do not call us to put items on hold. We want to make sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to buy them. First come, first served please!

PLease note if you are not familiar with our store…we are a bricks-and-mortar walk-in store only. We do not ship.

Also, although we are featuring these Beatles items today, you should know we have been buying huge amounts of CDs, DVDs, and records as well; we have purchased tens of thousands of titles in the last month. Our store is overflowing with all sorts of merchandise!

Hope to see you soon.

Have the Beatles ever made a Christmas album? I am very interesting in hearing it if so. It’s the Christmas season and I have come to find out a lot of bands have a Christmas album, which I never knew about. http://www.ranker.com/list/indie-christmas-albums/christmas-music I did not know all these bands had a Christmas album. It has intrigued me to find more albums! Let me know if anyone can help me out.

There is an album, fan club only, that compiled all the Christmas 7″ flexis onto one long-play LP, but there are very few songs on it…it is mostly spoken word. They never did an album of Christmas songs.

I own a copy of this flexi disc. It is kind of weird to listen to it and think back to when we thought it was so innocent at time.
I have one of the songs playing on my blog
