My favorite Coltrane album at this time is &quot;Crescent&quot; on the Impulse label (1963 I think).

John Coltrane is in his next stage of development and experimentation, following the Prestige and Atlantic years; using more pentatonics, modal interchanges, and harmonic substitutions.  He is also using a larger tip opening and facing on his Otto Link mouthpiece than in previous albums.  

This album is similar to the other Coltrane quartet albums on Impulse with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones, and can be compared closely to &quot;A Love Supreme&quot;
