It’s That Time Of The Year!
by Dee in Editorials, Opinion Posts, Uncategorized
Welcome to the end of the year, whether you like it or not!
We’re getting to that time of year where all of us music geeks are being asked to compile our favorite songs and CD’s of the year.
As many of you already know, I’m a real cranky kind of gal (no, really?) when it comes to judging music this early in the year, even though I’m more than ready for summer to be over. I know it’s only the middle of August, but I’m also anticipating the autumn releases as well.
After all, don’t forget, both Radiohead and Bruce released their most highly acclaimed CDs last year in late September and October.
But, I digress…
So, XPN is, as always, asking their listeners to submit their “Top Ten Of Something”, since the station seems to have some sort of need to countdown eight hundred and eighty five of songs during the fall.
Last year is was the “885 Most Magical Musical Moments” which left most of scratching our heads and thinking, “What the hell are they getting at?” Do they want to know about the first time we heard the Beatles? Heard Joni Mitchell? Made love in a college dorm room with U2 playing in the background? Didn’t think so.
Anyway, this year’s XPN’s “We Must Countdown, And We Must Do It Now!” is a bit easier.
This year, it’s all about your essential (defined as “absolutely, necessary, indispensable”), or quintessential (defined as “the pure concentrated substance of something”) XPN songs. I have mine, but I’ll leave those two definitions up to you to figure out.
Here are my ten songs, and if you’re participating in this, I’d love to hear what yours are.
- “All At Sea”, Jamie Cullum
- “Heaven Right Here”, Jeb Loy Nichols
- “Driving With The Brakes On”, Del Amitri
- “Take The Skinheads Bowling”, Camper Van Beethoven
- “A Shot In The Arm”, Wilco
- “In These Shoes?”, Kirsty MacColl
- “Head Home”, Midlake
- “I-76″, G. Love and Special Sauce
- “Half Acre”, Hem
- “Endicott”, Kid Creole and the Coconuts
